It’s Only a Play: Reviews, Plot, Cast
NY Times calls It’s Only A Play “Deliriously Dishy,” WSJ says “the hottest ticket in town,” and USA Today calls It’s Only A Play “A Fierce, Uproarious NewPlay”
It’s Only a Play is a Broadway play is (as you might guess) about Broadway plays. It takes a hilariously, cynical look at the Broadway scene and it’s colorful, oddball characters.
It’s opening night of Peter Austin’s Broadway play, and gathered together with him to await the first reviews, are his producer, the director, the starlet of the play, his best friend (who is himself a television star) and the coat-checker.
Playwright Peter Austin (Matthew Broderick) knows his career is on the line with the success (or failure) his play, and this is producer Julia Budder’s (Katie Finneran) first-time investment in a Broadway play. Also with something on-the-line with the success of the play are the play’s director Frank Finger (Maulik Pancholy), and the play’s star Virginia Noyes (Stockard Channing) - as her drug induced attitude shows.
Ira Drew (F. Murray Abraham), a drama critic who is jealous of the success of others who actually “have talent,” and even Peter’s best friend James Wicker (Martin Short), secretly want the play to be a flop. Observing the events unfold is coat checker Gus P. Head, who also has aspirations of acting on Broadway.
